Back in the Winter of 2006 as the nights drew in I began to experiment with long exposure nighttime photography. The Humber Bridge was an obvious choice of subject and this photograph was taken on a misty December evening just after Christmas.
The 30 second exposure gave time for the stars to burn through the haze, revealing constellations in the southern sky with amazing clarity. Orion The Hunter is clearly visible in the centre of the image and in the original several others can be seen including Canis Major The Great Dog (the larger of Orion’s two hunting dogs), Lepus The Hare (Orion’s prey), Eridanus The River and Taurus The Bull. None of these were visible to the naked eye when the picture was taken.
This photograph was another early success for me. It proved to be one of my most popular on Flickr, the photo-sharing website and was one of my four photographs which were later shortlisted for the Landscape Photographer of the Year competition.
